Minigrids in Africa: The Context for Minigrids in Africa
This course presents current and potential roles that minigrids have in meeting the need for electrical power in African countries. Following an overview of the status and coverage of national grids in Africa, the technological, economic, regulatory, environmental, and sustainability factors for deploying minigrids are reviewed. This provides an understanding of the many elements of the context for minigrids in African countries and the factors that need to be considered when designing and implementing minigrids in African countries.

Instructor
Dr. Joseph Mutale
Dr. Joseph Mutale is a Senior Member of IEEE, a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology of the United Kingdom, and a Fellow of the Engineering Institution of Zambia. He is the co-founder and former Chair of the IEEE Working Group on Sustainable Energy Systems for Developing Communities. In addition, Dr. Mutale is Professor Emeritus of Sustainable Energy and Electric Power Systems at the University of Manchester in the UK. He is a former Director of Engineering Development at ZESCO, the Zambian National utility, as well as a Senior Partner and Energy Lead at Paeradigms LLC.
