How to Read a Standard

This course will help you to gain an understanding of what is a standard, why standards are important, and how to understand the contents of a standard.

You’ll learn who uses engineering standards and why. Descriptions of the different components of a standard and what is contained in each section are provided along with actual examples from IEEE Standards. The “language of standards” is also discussed to provide the reader with guidance on the nuances of using certain words over others in the context of a standard.

Howard Wolfman has been an active volunteer in the IEEE for many decades as well as having many decades of industry experience. Through his experience he has been personally exposed to ethics situations. He is the founder and principal of a consulting company and is the chairman of the board of trustees of a small municipal sanitary district. Additionally, he is an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
