Battery Energy Storage Systems: Safety Considerations, Codes & Standards

This course developed in partnership with IEEE Power and Energy Society, is meant to increase understanding on basic safety of Battery Energy Storage Systems and progressively exploring complex topics such as system-level approaches for improved safety. It will also cover the safety aspects of various battery technologies including Li-Ion, Aqueous and Lead Acid batteries. Environmental issues involving hazardous spills and fire management will also be discussed to equip course participants with effective response measures. Insight into necessary training for first responders and key safety aspects for electric vehicles will also be covered. The relevant codes and standards for BESS safety and their potential limitations will be presented so that by course end, participants will have a firm understanding of most battery safety aspects.

Mark Siira

Mark Siira is a principal consultant at Power Innovation and an active leader in several organizations developing industry standards, such as IEEE Standards Committee 21, where he serves as Chair, and the IEEE Coordinating Committee on Distributed Generation, Energy Storage Interconnection, and Smart Grid Interoperability. He is also a member of the UL Standards Technical Panels 1741 (Inverters), UL2200 (Generators), and 3001 (Systems). In addition, Siira is also a member of the American Society of Heating and Refrigeration Engineers (ASHRAE) SSPC 300 Commissioning Guideline Committees.

Babu Chalamala

Dr. Babu Chalamala (IEEE Fellow) is a Senior Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories. In this role, he provides strategic vision for research areas in grid modernization, energy storage technologies, power electronics, and grid components and manufacturing. Earlier, he was head of the Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department and Program Manager for Grid Energy Storage at the laboratory. Prior to joining Sandia in 2015, he was a Corporate Fellow at MEMC Electronic Materials for five  years, where he led R&D and product development in grid scale energy storage. Before that, he had founding roles in two startup ventures commercializing large format lithium batteries and digital x-ray sources. Earlier, as a research staff member at Motorola and Texas Instruments, he made significant contributions to vacuum microelectronics and flat panel display technologies.
