Cloud Computing: Introduction

  • Online

In this course, we will discuss how Cloud Computing is really changing both the technology model and business model of Information Technology. We will next talk about the "Hype Curve" as popularized by the Gartner Group. Their work tracks new technologies through their "hype" lifecycle, where one can see many technologies do not have a successful journey from their introduction "as the latest new thing" to real mature technology products in a long lasting marketplace. We will see where Cloud Computing fits in this lifecycle analysis. We will look at the genealogy of Cloud Computing, in terms of where it evolved from and what the important, original conceptual elements were. From this, we will be able to understand why Cloud Computing caused such a massive "paradigm shift" in how computing was done. Cloud Computing has become such a well accepted movement with real technical and business benefits. While initially a new way to combine computing, networking, and storage, Cloud Computing is now causing a new wave of innovation in those underlying fields. Computing, Networking, and Storage are evolving to support the new scale and automation dimensions of Cloud Computing. Many will point out Cloud Computing's roots in "Grid Computing," a super-computer technique employed in Academia and Research. In many ways, Grid paved the way for innovations in Cloud. However, Grid is not the same as Cloud, as will be shown. We will look at the Anatomy of Cloud Computing, and compare it with Grid.

What you will learn:

  • Describe how cloud computing changes the technology model and business model of Information Technology
  • Explain why cloud computing causes paradigm shift
  • Compare cloud computing with grid computing
