Wind Turbine Manufacturing, Assembly, Test and Maintenance Challenges

The entire world is seeking more energy, including energy generated by wind power. In this course the basic components of a wind turbine are illustrated and explained. The integration of CAD with computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and numerically- controlled machining coupled with computer coordinated measuring machine inspection has led to great advances in manufacturing parts for wind turbines. We will also consider some very new developments in the design and manufacture of wind turbines; for example; wind turbines that don't have any gear boxes.

What you will learn:

  • Review windmill and wind turbine design and manufacturing goals for increased yield and production rates 
  • Discuss how wind turbine design influences automated manufacturing, as well as deployment in the field

Paul Ranky is a Full Tenured Professor of Engineering Design, Manufacturing, Industrial and Management Systems at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at NJIT, with an additional faculty appointment with NJIT's IT (Information Technology Program), as Professor of IS & IT. Member or former member of SAE, IET, IEEE, PMI, SME, ASME, ISPE, International Soc. of Pharmaceutical Engineers, ASQ, the Lean Manufacturing and the Quality Auditing Dvivisions, educated by ASQ in lean six-sigma, quality leadership, and others., John K. L. Ho received his BS, MS & PhD degrees in Computer, Control and Manufacturing System Engineering from Coventry University and University of East London. He has many years design experience in the field of automation while working at GEC Electrical Projects Ltd in the UK.  At present, Dr. Ho is an associate professor in the Department of Manufacturing Engineering & Engineering Management, City University of Hong Kong. Dr. Ho’s current research interest is in the areas of system sustainability modeling, design for green, intelligent manufacturing for green and industrial ecology.
