This course presents the fundamental principles and practical aspects of HVDC transmission systems. It begins with an introduction into the main market drivers of HVDC transmission. A comparison of the AC and DC interconnection schemes is provided, and various commercially available HVDC transmission systems and converter configurations are overviewed. The main components of HVDC transmission systems are then presented, and the economics, efficiency, footprint, track record and reliability of DC links are elaborated on.

Babak Badrzadeh (PhD, Robert Gordon University) has published several articles and presented tutorials on industrial power systems comprising variable speed drives, and on grid integration of renewable energy sources. He has been working as a consultant in a wide variety of power systems at Mott MacDonald Ltd, Transmission and Distribution Division and is an active member of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Industrial Power Converter Committee (IPCC). Babak is a member of the transient stability committee of the IEEE standard on power system analysis (3002 series).
