The Nature of Nudging

“Nudging” refers to the ability of systems or robots (embodied AI) to overtly influence human users with or without their direct consent. When used by permission and with awareness around a robot or system’s desired goals, nudging can greatly improve user’s lives for anything from dieting to depression. However, when nudging is covert and utilized in aggressive advertising algorithms to incentivize purchase or influence behavior that may not be desired by users or their loved ones nudging poses an ethical threat and negative business implications.

John Sullins III (Ph.D., Binghamton University (SUNY), 2002) is a full professor and Chair of philosophy at Sonoma State University. His specializations are: philosophy of technology, philosophical issues of artificial intelligence/robotics, cognitive science, philosophy of science, engineering ethics, and computer ethics. His recent research interests are found in the technologies of Robotics and AI and how they inform traditional philosophical topics on the questions of life and mind as well as its impact on society and the ethical design of successful autonomous machines.

Laurence Devillers

Prof. Laurence Y. Devillers is a full professor of Computer Sciences at Paris-Sorbonne University, France. She does her research at LIMSI-CNRS and heads the team on “Affective and Social Dimensions of Spoken Interactions” working on machine learning, affective computing, spoken dialog system, human-robot interaction and on the ethical design of chatbot and empathetic and social robot. She is also member of the French Commission on the Ethics of Research in Digital Sciences and Technologies (CERNA-Allistene).  Prof. Devillers is member of the board of AAAC (emotion-research.net), member of IEEE, ACL and ISCA. She is an ISCA distinguished lecturer for 2017-18. She wrote a book “Des Robots et des hommes : mythes, fantasmes et réalité”, March 2017, (Plon ed., France). She is involved in the IEEE Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems since 2016. She is now leading the IEEE SA - P7008 - Standard for Ethically Driven Nudging for Robotic, Intelligent and Autonomous Systems.
