Engineering Ethics: Case Study of DeKort and the US Coast Guard

In this course Dr. Starrett reviews the IEEE Code of Ethics and introduces a case study of an engineer confronted by an ethical dilemma involving a project for the US Coast Guard. DeKort's dilemma is described in detail and Dr. Starrett discusses the turning points in DeKort's handling of the situation. The learner is asked to suggest the best course of action and to cite the relevant principles from the IEEE Code of Ethics.

Steve Starrett is an Associate Professor of Water Engineering at Kansas State University where he has taught courses in engineering ethics for over ten years. He is a member (and past chair) of the Committee on Licensure and Ethics for the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE). Dr. Starrett served as a Technical Chair for the Environmental and Water Resources Institute 2009 Congress.  Dr. Starrett is the principal and owner of Starrett Engineering, LLC and a licensed Professional Engineer in four states.
