Engineering Ethics: How to Mentor New Professionals

This course is designed to assist those who work with engineering professionals who are new to the field in navigating ethical dilemmas. Engineers who are just entering the profession will inevitably confront ethical challenges in their work. Supervisors and more experienced colleagues can help new engineers handle these challenges successfully by discussing codes of professional ethics as well as sharing their experiences in resolving ethical dilemmas. Dr. Starrett reviews the IEEE Code of Ethics in depth and explains methods traditionally used to make ethical decisions. The author suggests that viewers consider ethical challenges they have encountered professionally and review their responses in light of the ethical principles presented in order to derive maximum benefit from the course.

Steve Starrett is an Associate Professor of Water Engineering at Kansas State University where he has taught courses in engineering ethics for over ten years. He is a member (and past chair) of the Committee on Licensure and Ethics for the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE). Dr. Starrett served as a Technical Chair for the Environmental and Water Resources Institute 2009 Congress.  Dr. Starrett is the principal and owner of Starrett Engineering, LLC and a licensed Professional Engineer in four states.
